New Initiatives
Introducing Our New Internship Program: ISC2 New Jersey Cyber Guardians!
The ISC2 New Jersey Chapter has identified the need to address cyber threats as a major concern for non-profit groups that often lack necessary resources to combat cyber risks.
In response to this need, we have established ISC2 New Jersey Cyber Guardians, a high-level program designed to provide cybersecurity assessment services to the 501(c)(3) (nonprofit) community while empowering and advancing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals through internship opportunities.
We intend to launch the initiative this year with the assistance of the Center for Cyber Safety and Education.
**If you know of any non-profit, NJ-based organizations that might be in need of this service, please reach out to Ken Fishkin at president@isc2chapternj.org.
Special thanks to Grace Chi for creating our logo!
The ISC2 New Jersey Chapter Podcast is Coming!
Due to an overwhelming demand to start a podcast for the chapter, we have formed a committee last month and will be producing a podcast starting this month.
Our first podcast series, Jersey Girls in Cyber is scheduled for this month with our hosts Marie Wang, Claudia Hernandez and Aneta Klepacka and our special guest, Michael Redmond, former Deputy CISO of a large municipality!
Special thanks to Damilola Jibowu for designing the graphic and Ting Cosper for coming up with the title!

Introducing the ISC2 New Jersey Chapter CMMC Round-Table
Cybersecurity attacks are on the rise and as such poses an existential threat to organizations regardless of size, industry or geographic footprint. Due to the sophistication of today’s cybersecurity attacks, governments around the world are also vulnerable to security breaches. To protect American intellectual property and national security information, the Department of Defense (DoD) developed the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program to reinforce the importance of the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) cybersecurity for safeguarding the information that supports and enables our defense forces.
The DoD currently requires covered defense contractors and subcontractors to implement the security protections set forth in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication (SP) 800-171 to provide adequate security for sensitive unclassified DoD information that is processed, stored, or transmitted on contractor information systems.
The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Program provides the DoD the mechanism needed to verify that a defense contractor or subcontractor has implemented the security requirements at each CMMC Level and is maintaining that protection at the required level for the term of the contract.
As the security protections outlined in the Special Publication (SP) 800-171 is meant to provide adequate security for sensitive unclassified DoD information, we at the local New Jersey ISC2 chapter, created the CMMC Roundtable, where we meet monthly to have meaningful and inclusive interactions, where participants have an opportunity to contribute their insights and engage in conversations on a variety of relevant CMMC topics.
We invite you to join us as having insights provided by someone who has faced a particular CMMC related issue(s) can be more useful than just reading about it. The Round Table not only provides a platform to share ideas, but it also provides opportunities for networking, skill development and potential marketing opportunities.

JuMPstart Mentorship Program (JUMP) September Newsletter Update: Exciting Mentorship Program News
Dear Members,
As the days grow shorter and we transition into autumn, we are thrilled to share some exciting news with our NJ ISC2 Chapter community. After a thorough review process, we are pleased to announce that we have selected Qooper as the platform to run our mentorship program. This decision marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to enhance the mentor-mentee experience. The Qooper platform offers a wide array of features that will streamline our mentorship process, including availability tools, calendar integrations, auto-matching, and more. We believe this tool will bring a new level of efficiency and engagement to our program, ultimately enriching the relationships and growth opportunities for all participants. We are currently in the final stages of preparation and are targeting an official go-live date in October. This timeline allows us to ensure everything is set up correctly and that all members are comfortable with the new platform before we fully transition.
As always, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all our mentors and mentees for their ongoing participation and support. Your commitment is what makes our program a success, and we are excited to see the benefits that Qooper will bring to our community.
If you have any questions or need assistance as we approach the launch, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at mentoring@isc2chapternj.org. We look forward to embarking on this new chapter together and to the continued success of our mentorship program.
Warm regards,
Matthew Lang and The Mentorship Committee.

Civil Participation in Cybersecurity by Ola Komolafe, CISSP
Authored by Ola Komolafe
According to Forbes, an increase of 47% of internet users is expected in the next five years from 5.35 billion in 2024 to 7.9 billion in 2029. The world's dependency on information technology for daily survival is obvious. From media socialization, on-site to remote work and business transactions, gaming and what have you. However, the risk of staying safe and secure online is becoming increasingly challenging. This article calls for the full participation of all users in cybersecurity.
The United Nations projected the world population to reach 8.5 billion in 2030, and to increase further to 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.4 billion by 2100. With the projection of 7.9 billion internet users in 2029, it is safe to say that every citizen has a role in securing digital assets. Also, in line with the disaster management tenets “inform, influence, inspire,” there is a need to encourage all users to protect their digital footprints.
