Message From The President
It's hard to believe that summer is almost over and my daughter is off to college again! I thought that I would be relaxing more, but I found myself and our small army of volunteers actually working harder! Our volunteers have proved to be invaluable and I couldn't even fathom taking on all of these projects without them.
Just this summer alone, we started our JuMP mentorship program, partnered with NYU, created another networking event in Gathertown, and we are now in the midst of planning our first in-person event, a picnic! With the help of our dedicated volunteers, these initiatives were all happening while we continued to hold our monthly events and newsletters. Can't wait to see what we come up with during the second half of this year!
If you want to know how you can be a more active member in our growing community, please reach out to me at president@isc2chapternj.org.
Welcome Aboard!

Jumpstart Mentorship Program (JuMP) Feedback
We received wonderful feedback from Session 1 of our JuMP Series!
We asked our Mentees " What did you find beneficial from your meetings?" Below are their amazing responses:
Adam Shuren:
“We talked about the business end of IT, such as risk transfer, costs and solutions, in a broad way to gauge my level of understanding of the topic. Next, we dovetailed into his experience entering the IT Security field. This was very helpful because in my current role, it's mostly IT, so I was able to hear his approach and how he found his success in the field. Finally, we got into some pathways for me, which after review, was exactly what I needed to hear. The discussion around which certifications helped clarify the role I seek, which is in policy creation and auditing. It was very informative and also validated some of the things I was thinking about for the role.”
Vijoy Mathai:
“I found everything beneficial. We especially spoke about my interests and worked on a 3 year plan.”
Richard Ingordo:
“Pete was a great source of information. He has fresh ideas that I felt really gave me motivation in a role where it’s been lacking lately. He also brought the NYU program to my attention which I wasn’t aware of before."
Imel Edrada:
"Mike gave me a lot of pointers on resume writing as well as on LinkedIn profile. He also provided resources on resume, profile writing, career or job resources. He was very helpful and a very good mentor."
Thank you to our wonderful mentors participating in this program!
Upcoming Presenters
Raymond Blaine - Director, Cyber Research Center, USMA
Raymond Blaine is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Cyber Research Center at the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) at West Point. In this capacity he is responsible for leading specialized research programs in support of USMA, Army, and DoD requirements as well as teaching cyber security subjects in the West Point curriculum. Immediately prior to this, he spent three years leading two of the twenty Army defensive cyber protection teams. He took his cyber protection team from inception through the traditional cybersecurity training and certification by U. S. Cyber Command. He then led his team through specialized training in industrial control system (ICS) security. His team became highly specialized in this area and was tasked with the defense of all Army ICS systems globally. These ICS systems reside on almost all Army installations and fall in to several of the Department of Homeland Security’s critical infrastructure sectors, to include dams, energy, and the defense industrial base. Building a defensive cyber team and defending such a vast scope of diverse types of infrastructure gives Ray a unique perspective of the challenges associated with the field. Ray also was the lead for a cyber protection team in support of the defense of US AFRICOM’s networks. This was a more traditional enterprise defense mission but included multiple remote and austere locations on the African continent. Ray was among the first cohort of Army officers to be selected for the Army’s newest branch, Cyber Warfare. His military assignments include a variety of duty positions in the Cyber Protection Brigade at Fort Gordon as well as the 82nd Airborne Division and 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, NC. Ray was the Company Commander for HHC, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He has served two tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom and one tour in Operation Enduring Freedom. Ray received the BS from the U.S. Military Academy and the MS and Ph.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University, all in electrical engineering. His Ph.D. focused on radiation hardened by design analog and mixed-signal microelectronic circuits. His research interests are in industrial control system security, data visualization for cyber security, and cybersecurity risk. Ray is a senior member of the IEEE and ACM and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Brett Thorson - Principal, BCG Platinion
Over 25 years of experience in cybersecurity and information technology including work in the federal intelligence community and with large global commercial firms. Recognized for leadership, communication skills, and ability to translate complex technical matters to plain language. Expertise in security program management, security research, multi-cloud security implementation, IPv6, counter industrial espionage, incident response and security engineering.
In collaboration with MIT, BCG has developed its TTX methodology to identify gaps in cyber resilience and help organizations feel the impact and discover solutions. Having provided TTXs to the World Economic Forum and thousands of other organizations over the past four years, BCG has designed and predicted a wide range of scenarios and helped multiple organizations solve for simulations such as a total lockout of employees to a facility as well as a vision for 100% work-from-home solutions in 2018 and 2019.
