Welcome to the (ISC)² New Jersey Chapter's December issue!
It's hard to believe that we've reached the end of 2021! We appreciate those of you who take the time to read our monthly publication. We hope our newsletters in 2022 will continue to provide the cybersecurity community with timely and relevant monthly New Jersey Chapter news, upcoming events and initiatives, and articles from our dedicated member volunteers.

Message from the President
We really finished strong this year and we have some unbelievable growth to be proud of:
- Over 200 paid members / 50 student members
- Published 12 newsletters with over 850 subscribers
- Conducted 25 virtual events (including our public speaking workshop)
- Coordinated 3 in-person events (picnics and holiday dinner)
- Developed two mentorship programs (members and college students)
- Held a virtual conference
- Facilitated a CCSP study group
- Provided educational classes
- Partnered with NYU
With over 25 volunteers now, we are moving like a bullet train that can't slow down!
Check out what we have already planned for next year!
We can always use more volunteers to make this community bigger and better!

Sister Chapter
(ISC)² North Bay Chapter
We are pleased to announce that we now have a sister chapter in North Bay, California! The President of this chapter, Victor Ramensky, expressed interest in learning from us on how to make theirs successful, as it is only a year old. We look forward to growing this relationship next year!
Current Initiatives
JuMPstart Mentorship Program (JuMP)
The JuMPstart Mentorship Program for our New Jersey Chapter members is in full swing!
We have received wonderful feedback from our participants confirming that the program helped build professional relationships that are mutually fulfilling for our members.
We are currently wrapping up Session 1 (November/December 2021) of our JuMP Series 2 (November 2021 - April 2022) and preparing for Session 2 in January 2022.
Due to popular demand, we are also kicking off another JuMP Series with a planned date from February 2022 - June 2022. If you are interested in participating in our mentorship program as a mentor or mentee, you can sign up here.

NYU and (ISC)² New Jersey Chapter
The (ISC)² New Jersey Chapter and the New York University Tandon School of Engineering have formed a partnership to further educational and credentialing opportunities for students and the cybersecurity community.
In addition to participating in NYU Tandon events, lectures, career fairs, and other professional development activities, (ISC)² will offer students a full membership completely free giving them access to a network of local industry leaders. As part of the agreement, (ISC)² members can sign up for The NYU Center for Cybersecurity (CCS) mailing list to stay current with research and events featuring leading faculty and industry partners at www.cyber.nyu.edu.
In collaboration with industry partners on the NYU Tandon Advisory Council, NYU Tandon School of Engineering will offer an astounding scholarship to (ISC)² members regardless of their country of residence.
The NYU Cyber Fellowship program is an elite, highly-technical Cybersecurity Master's Degree extends qualifying students with a scholarship that covers 75% of their tuition for the 10-course, part-time program. Additionally, the partnership will present a 15% off tuition to other online or on-campus graduate degree programs. As member-students will also be able to access networking and mentorship events with the (ISC)² New Jersey Chapter.
NYU Tandon has open enrollment for members looking to apply to NYU Cyber Fellows for the Fall or Spring semesters. There is NO GRE required (graduate admission guidelines apply) and they have also streamlined the application process which only takes 15 minutes with a decision in 15 days. Simply:
- Gather a Resume, a Statement of Purpose (250 words), an unofficial Transcripts, name two References
- Start application
- Enter application fee waiver code (worth $90) NYUTO21
- Choose MS in Cybersecurity, part-time program, and answer YES to the question about 'applying for Cyber Fellows’
- Review and Finalize - “SUBMIT”

iQ4 Volunteer Mentoring Program
Introducing our new college/high school mentoring opportunity with iQ4! You do not need previous mentoring experience to sign up. Currently, students are taking courses on topics such as insider threat, ethical hacking and cloud security.

Educational Training
CCSP Study Group
All (ISC)² New Jersey Chapter members are welcome to join us for this CCSP study group that will be held on a weekly basis, starting on December 4th.
6 week program (excluding holiday weekends)
Dates: Saturdays on 12/4, 12/11, 12/18, 1/8, 1/15 and 1/22
Time: 9-11am
Location: Online Event
Email Ken Fishkin to register for this study group that is already in progress. Previous recordings of the study group will be provided to you if you want to attend.
CISSP Training Course
Looking to get your CISSP certification but don't want to pay $$$$ to get it?
We are pleased to offer our members a 5 day CISSP training course given by a certified (ISC)² trainer. This course usually costs $1,500-$2,000, but is now only $100 for our members. Please note that this is a one-time class and may not be offered again.
Dates: 5 consecutive Saturdays starting on January 29th.

Rafal Los
Rafal Los is an industry innovator, strategist, and personality. His career spans 20+ years while working inside companies from the Fortune 10 to a firm of less than 10. Rafal's strengths include strategic leadership in security products and services - focusing on market strategy, roadmap development and execution, process optimization, and bringing teams together to solve complex problems. Recent achievements include delivering on a company strategy pivot from infrastructure provider to security-as-a-service by rebuilding pre-sales strategy and delivery; implementing significant changes in business process that led to the company's ability to measure the direct impact of changes on sales and customer lifecycle. Rafal is an active member of the Security Advisor Alliance, serving on the advisory board with the intent of creating innovative ways for security leaders to give back to their communities through service and knowledge sharing.
Additionally, Rafal is a founder and host of the Down the Security Rabbithole Podcast - an industry podcast delivering a weekly office-friendly format since 2011 focused on thought leadership through interesting guests and topics. Rafal's career is about more than being a recognizable expert - it's continually challenging accepted thinking and bringing people together to solve complex problems in innovative ways.
Thomas Ryan
Thomas Ryan is an established expert on cyber & physical security specializing in red team operations, application and supply chain security, information operations & personal protection. His precision focus during his military and post-military career has been on offensive and defensive security operations and their application within both public and private organizations.
Thomas serves as Board Advisor for numerous companies while functioning as a Solutions Architect for Fortify, the leader in application security software.
In 2010 Thomas gained global notoriety for his research known as “The Robin Sage Experiment”. His research focused on the dangers and threats around social media. To this day the impact of this research is still relevant as well as 10x greater. Currently, Robin Sage Experiment's concepts being taught in 28 universities in their cybersecurity and homeland security classes. It has also be referenced in 100’s of security research papers and is currently used in many red teams and intelligence collection operations. Don’t be surprised when you Thomas referenced 3 different times in the MITRE ATT&CK Framework.
